1892 – The first public basketball game is held in Springfield, Massachusetts.

1961 – The Blackhawks and Maple Leafs rack up 40 total penalties in a single game, 20 by each side. That at the time was a record.

1963 – Loyola (Chicago) beats Tennessee Tech 111-42, setting the larges margin of victory (69 points) in the history of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

1986 – Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders becomes the first player in NHL history to score 50 goals in nine straight seasons.

1986 – The NFL adopts an instant replay rule.

1991 – Steffi Graf’s streak of 186 weeks ranked as the #1 women’s tennis player in the world comes to an end as she’s replaced by Monica Seles.

2003 – The UCONN women’s basketball team’s streak of 70 straight wins, the longest in Division I women’s hoops history, comes to an end after losing to Villanova 52-48 in the Big East championship.

2007 – Chris Simon of the New York Islanders is suspended for an NHL record 25 games after hitting intentionally hitting Ryan Hollweg in the head with his stick.

2020 – The NBA suspends the 2019-20 season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tests positive for COVID-19.
