1874 – The National Association of Professional Baseball Players officially adopts new rules, including the addition of the batter box, the expulsion of any player caught betting on his team, and a fine for a player betting on another team.

1929 – Montreal Canadiens goalie George Hainsworth becomes the first goalie in NHL history to record 20 shutouts in a season.

1951 – The first NBA All-Star Game is held in Boston, with the East beating the West 111-94.

1962 – Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA record by scoring 100 points in a Philadelphia Warriors’ win over the Knicks 169-147. Chamberlain was 36-63 from the field and 28-32 from the free throw line.

1966 – Blackhawks forward Bobby Hull becomes the first player in NHL history to have two 50-goal seasons.

1969 – Boston Bruins center Phil Esposito becomes the first player in NHL history to record a 100-point season.

1991 – North Carolina State point guard Chris Corchiani becomes the first player in NCAA men’s basketball history to record 1,000 career assists.

2004 – The Colts sign quarterback Peyton Manning to the largest contract in NFL history at the time, inking the star to a seven-year, 98 million dollar deal with a $34.5 million signing bonus.

2012 – Major League Baseball announces the expansion of the post-season from eight to 10 teams, with an extra wild card team in each league.
