1959 – The Chicago Cardinals trade running back Ollie Matson to the Los Angeles Rams for a whopping nine players.

1959 – The Boston Celtics defeated the Minneapolis Lakers 173-139 in a game that saw several records get set. The Celtics set the record for the most points in a game, most points in a half (90), most points in a quarter (52), and most field goals (72). Boston’s Bob Cousy also set the record for assists in a game with 28.

1960 – The US men’s hockey team beats the USSR 3-2 en route to a gold medal.

1973 – The White Sox sign slugger Dick Allen to a three-year $750,000 contract.

1977 – Blackhawks forward Stan Mikita scores career goal #500.

1992 – The Prairie View men’s basketball team sets the NCAA Division I record for most losses in a season as they fall to 0-28.

1994 – Sweden defeats Canada in a shootout to win the men’s hockey gold medal at the Winter Games in Lillehammer.

1998 – The Indiana Pacers defeat the Portland Trailblazers 124-59, making it the first time in the history of the NBA that a team scored more than twice as many points as its opponent.

2006 – Effa Manley is the first woman elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Manley was co-owner of the Newark Eagles and was among 17 people chosen from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues by a special committee.

2007 – The Edmonton Oilers retire Mark Messier’s #11.

2015 – NASCAR Spring Cup driver Travis Kvapil is forced to withdraw from a race at Atlanta Motor Speedway after his car is stolen from a hotel parking lot.
