THIS DAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: 2/15

1932 – U.S. athlete Eddie Eagan becomes the first athlete to win gold medal at both the Summer and Winter Olympics after being part of the first place four man bobsled team. Eagan had previously won gold in boxing in the 1920 Summer games in Antwerp.

1978 – Leon Spinks defeats Muhammad Ali in 15 rounds to win the world heavyweight title.

1980 – Wayne Gretzky ties an NHL record by recording seven assists in one game.

1986 – Over 44,000 fans attend an NBA game in Detroit to see the Pistons take on the Portland Trailblazers. At the time, it was the largest crowd ever for an NBA game.

1990 – MLB owners lock out players.

1994 – With career win #254, Tom Barrasso becomes the winningest US born goalie in NHL history.

1996 – The Cleveland Browns fire head coach Bill Belichick after he goes 36-44 with the team.

1998 – In his 20th start at Daytona, Dale Earnhardt finally wins the big race. It also snaps a 59 race winless streak for “The Intimidator”.

1999 – Wayne Gretzky records five assists in a game against the Predators, which puts him exactly 1,000 points ahead of the NHL’s second all-time leading scorer, Gordie Howe.
