1944 – The fewest amount of passes are attempted in a college football game as Maryland and Michigan State combine for one pass attempt (from Maryland) in an 8-0 Michigan State win.

1963 – Jim Brown sets the NFL single season rushing record with 1,863 yards.

1968 – American high jumper Dick Fosbury wins the gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics using his unconventional, at the time, technique. Now known as the “Fosbury Flop” it has become the accepted technique in the sport.

1976 – The Philadelphia 76ers acquire “Dr. J” Julius Erving from the Nets for $3 million.

1992 – The first baseball World Series game held outside of the United States is played as the Blue Jays beat the Braves 3-2 in Toronto.

1993 – The Blue Jays and Phillies play in the longest and highest scoring game in World Series history, as Toronto wins 15-14 in a game that took four hours and 14 minutes.

2004 – The Boston Red Sox complete a comeback from being down 3-0 in a seven game series against the Yankees, beating their rival in game seven of the ALCS.

2010 – Rick Rypien of the Vancouver Canucks is suspended indefinitely by the NHL after grabbing a fan in a game at Minnesota. Rypien eventually gets a six game suspension.
