1911 – Cy Young picks up career victory #511. It is the final win in his career.

1959 – The White Sox clinch the American League pennant.

1969 – San Francisco Giants great Willie Mays becomes the second player in baseball history to hit 600 career home runs.

1974 – With new overtime rules in effect, the Steelers and Broncos play to the first tie in NFL history, with the game ending with the teams knotted up at 35-35.

1986 – Fernando Valenzuela, Dodgers pitcher, becomes the first Mexican-born player to win 20 games in a season. 

1987 – NFL players go on strike for 24 days. 

1990 – Andre Dawson picks up career steal #300. He’s the second player in MLB history, after Willie Mays, to have 300 career steals and 2,000 career hits.

1990 – University of Illinois running back Howard Griffith sets an NCAA record by scoring eight rushing touchdowns in a 56-21 rout of Southern Illinois.

1991 – Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula records his 300^th career win.

1993 – At age 46, Nolan Ryan pitches in the final game of his career.

2004 – Giants slugger Barry Bonds is intentionally walked four times in one game, tying his own MLB record.
