1921 – Baseball fan Reuben Berman sues the New York Giants, claiming he suffered mental and physical distress after refusing to return a foul ball. He was awarded $100.

1978 – Duane Kuiper of the Cleveland Indians becomes the third player in MLB history to hit two bases loaded triples in the same game.

1984 – Pete Rose sets an MLB record with his 3,503rd career single.

1986 – US cyclist Greg LeMond becomes the first non-European to win the Tour de France.

1992 – Reggie Lewis of the Boston Celtics dies after collapsing on the court during practice. He was just 27 years old.

1993 – Mets pitcher Anthony Young picks up a win, ending his 27 game losing streak.

1996 – One person is killed and 110 are injured as a bomb explodes at Olympic Park in Atlanta during the Summer Olympics.

1999 – Tony Hawk becomes the first skateboarder to land a 900.

2001 – Deion Sanders retires from the NFL.
