FOOTBALL: RSN Top 10 – Week #9

In their first road game since Week #2, the Wolves fell short in their quest for a conference title, losing to GLAC rival West Side 42-23. The scoring output was the Wolves’ second lowest of the year, and the 42 points surrendered were the second most. While not winning a conference title has to be disappointing, it doesn’t mar a great season at Hammond Central - especially if they can get back to their winning ways with a showdown against Madison (4-4) on Saturday.

In last week’s Region Football Weekly, Cougar coach Alger Boswell told us that everyone knows the Cougars want to run the ball, and that’s exactly what they did in their conference championship win over Hammond Central. The offensive line paved the way for 470 yards on the ground, including 377 from Camajay Griffin-Terrell. Just because teams know the run is coming doesn’t mean they can stop it. Look for the Cougars to get off the bus running again this week when they travel to the Circle City to take on Crispus Attucks.

This run of success has put them just a game behind Andrean in the NCC standings and where do the Devils play on Friday? Oh yeah, at Andrean! Can Lowell pull off the upset and steal a share of the NCC crown for themselves? It’d be considered an upset, but with the way this team has been playing recently, don’t throw water on the Inferno just yet.

The last two weeks we’ve seen what we expected out of the Brickies this season, as they’ve outscored their two opponents 86-15. There’s no doubt that Hobart is playing their best ball of the year down the stretch and have a chance to continue that this week when they head to scuffling Munster - a team that’s dropped four straight.

A good River Forest team put a bit of a scare into the Warriors, who led just 12-6 in the third quarter – but Calumet kept their undefeated season alive by pulling away in the fourth quarter. Not only have the Warriors never been 8-0 before, there’s only been three seasons in program history where they’ve reached the eight win mark. An impressive season for sure, but a ninth win, with Hanover Central coming to The Badlands, would be the most impressive - not just of the year, but in the history of the program.

It's about time the WIldcat defense stepped up. After giving up a whopping seven points in each of the last three games, Hanover Central FINALLY got a shutout, blanking Wheeler to move to 8-0. Now that the sarcastic portion of this entry is done, we can focus on the game we’ve been looking forward to all year - 8-0 Hanover Central at 8-0 Calumet. The Cats have outscored opponents 194-13 away from home, so getting on the bus doesn’t seem to affect them at all. The GSSC South title is on the line - this will be a fun one.

Not a bad time to be playing shutdown defense because as the cliche goes - defense wins championships. And that’s exactly what the Pirates have their sights on as the postseason approaches. With the drop down to 5A, Merrillville has to be considered the favorite in both their sectional and against any regional opponent. Could this be the year the Pirate ship finally sails to Indy?
