FOOTBALL: RSN Top 10 – Week #8

The Cougars make their 2022 debut in the rankings after their fifth straight win - a 52-0 rout of EC Central. Not only have the Cougars won five straight, they’ve dominated in the last four, with an average margin of victory of 47 and a half points. It's a good thing they have momentum on their side as Hammond Central comes to Gary this week for all the conference marbles. With the Cougars heading to the GSSC next year, taking home the last conference crown would be quite an accomplishment for a team many wrote off after an 0-2 start.

With the Cougars heading to the GSSC next year, taking home the last conference crown would be quite an accomplishment for a team many wrote off after an 0-2 start.
Despite a win last week, Lowell falls a couple spots in the rankings, thanks to impressive performances from teams ranked around them and the narrow “W”. The Devils had to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to come from behind to beat a two win Highland team, so while the Red Devils do add one in the win column (the first two game win streak this season)\, they don’t get any style points, which do matter to voters. The Red Devils should be favored again this week with Munster invading “The Inferno,” but will it be another closer than expected game or will the Devils end this one early?

With their most recent defeat, they fall two games behind Crown Point in the DAC standings. While beating either CP or Merrillville would’ve been considered an upset, the fact that Valpo lost by 21 and then 27 points causes them to slip in the poll. But the good news for the Vikes is that they have time to turn things around before the tournament begins, as they have Portage and LC to close out the schedule - both games that Valpo will be favored in.

That was the kind of performance we had been waiting for out of the Brickies and one that should open up all the eyes of teams in Class 4A Sectional #17. If that’s the Hobart team we are going to see the rest of the way out, they’re going to be hard to beat.

While the strength of schedule hasn’t been the most difficult, it has been tougher (opponent win percentage wise) than other teams in the GSSC, and yes, that includes the one above them in the rankings. The schedule to close out the season is a bit of a challenge with 5-2 River Forest followed by 8-0 Hanover Central. The good news for the Warriors? Both of those games will take place at the Badlands.

Not only are the Niners on a hot streak, but they’ve scored 30 or more points in four of those five wins and have allowed 17 or fewer points in four wins as well. This is the time of year where historically the Niners play their best ball and 2022 seems to be no exception.

For the season, HC outscored opponents by a combined 203-20 in four games in Cedar Lake this year - not too shabby. While the Wildcats close out the regular season on the road with trips to Wheeler and Calumet, there’s no reason to worry as they’ve been dominant away from home - with a 147-13 differential outside of Hanover Township. That’s a lot of words to say that no matter where they play, the ‘Cats win and they win big.
