FOOTBALL: RSN Top 10 – Week #5

Has the schedule been the most difficult? No, but you can say that for a lot of teams. Have the results been impressive? Outside of the Week #2 loss at Valpo (who routes a lot of teams), absolutely. The Wolves have been putting up a lot of points, as in a combined 74 over the past two weeks, and the defense is playing really well to boot. With three consecutive games at home, now’s not the time to sleep on the Wolves.

After a 42-0 shellacking at the hands of Crown Point to open the season, we weren’t sure if the Red Devils would make their way back into the rankings, but they return at #9 spot for a couple of reasons. First, they’ve won two of their last three, with the loss coming to undefeated New Prairie, and second, Crown Point has established themselves as the top team in the Region, so the loss isn’t as bad in hindsight. If the Devils want to stay in the rankings though, they’ll have to earn it as the Hobart Brickies invade “The Inferno” this week to open NCC play.

So far K.K. as in Kirk Kennedy, and KV appear to be a perfect pairing, as the veteran coach has his team playing exceptionally well through four weeks. During their three game winning streak, the Kougars have outscored their opponents 131-0. That’s right - three straight shutouts for the KV D. Another one this week, with 3-1 Munster coming to town, could solidify the Kougars’ spot in the poll or even cause them to move up.

Calumet has now won every game this season by 33 or more points and boast the Region’s best scoring average at 48.0 points per game, which is also the eighth best mark in the state. After a one game home stand, the Warriors hit the road this week when they travel to EC Central to battle the Cardinals. Don’t be surprised if the visitors put up another lofty point total.

Lowell eliminated Hobart from the post-season a year ago, so you know the Brickies would love nothing more than to dampen the home fans’ spirits at “The Inferno” on Friday. We don’t know who’s going to win this one, but what we do know is that these Hobart-Lowell matchups are fun.

After getting down 14-0 early, with the Wolves scoring special teams and defensive touchdowns, the Green’s D clamped up and held the Wolves to just 138 yards of total offense and eight first downs. Talk about stepping up when your team needs it. That side of the ball will have to be great again this week as rival Chesterton, who’s in dire need of turning their season around, comes to Viking Field for a DAC battle.

This week they head to “The Boneyard” for a matchup against those same Panthers, and you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think Hanover is out for payback.

We knew Merrillville would bounce back because that’s what good teams and programs do. This week, the Pirates welcome in fellow DAC member Michigan City to Demaree Field. City’s been scuffling lately, so this is a good opportunity for Merrillville to continue righting the ship and stay near the top of the conference standings.
The Pirates responded well to their Week #3 loss to Crown Point by going on the road to pick up a 22 point win over Portage at “The Warpath”. We knew Merrillville would bounce back because that’s what good teams and programs do. This week, the Pirates welcome in fellow DAC member Michigan City to Demaree Field. This team appears to be too well coached to let any trap games trip them up, so while looking ahead to next week’s big showdown against Valpo may be tempting, we can’t imagine Buzz’s boys overlooking an opponent.
