FOOTBALL: RSN Top 10 – Week #3

The Ingots came into the 2022 campaign off the strength of three straight winning seasons for the first time in program history and they’ve already accomplished a team milestone - the first 2-0 start since 2010. Obviously two straight Ws to open the season is great, but that momentum and excitement goes by the wayside if they don’t win this week against arch-rival Lake Station. River hasn’t lost to the Eagles since 2014, and that’s a streak they want to keep going.

It’s been a tough start, especially defensively for the Wolves, as they’ve given up a combined 86 points in the first two games. But the combination of strength of their first two opponents and the lack of another team breaking down the door to get into the rankings has City hanging onto their spot in the poll…but just barely. Anything short of a win at Chesterton this week will likely see the Wolves on the outside looking in - something we definitely didn’t see happening this season.
It’s been a tough start, especially defensively for the Wolves, as they’ve given up a combined 86 points in the first two games. But the combination of strength of their first two opponents and the lack of another team breaking down the door to get into the rankings has City hanging onto their spot in the poll…but just barely. Continuing their slow, but steady, climb up the RSN rankings, Calumet had another impressive road performance in Week #2, routing West Side and putting up 50 plus points for the second straight week. The road Warriors ride the bus again this week (their third of five straight away from home) to take on winless Wheeler. Will Calumet’s climb up the rankings continue? All we can say is don’t bet against it.

While Hobart doesn’t exactly get credit for losing to both Chesterton and Merrillville, we can’t punish them too harshly for scheduling tough teams early in the season. They won’t get that same benefit of the doubt this week as they host Griffith - a team recently voted out of the Top 10. The Brickies need to win if they want to stay in.
It’s not often that a team A) only falls one spot in the rankings despite losing by 10 at home and B) is ranked as high as #7 despite being 0-2, but that’s where Hobart currently stands after two weeks. While Hobart doesn’t exactly get credit for losing to both Chesterton and Merrillville, we can’t punish them too harshly for scheduling tough teams early in the season. They won’t get that same benefit of the doubt this week as they host Griffith - a team recently voted out of the Top 10. The Brickies need to win if they want to stay in.
The Trojans hung with Warsaw for most of their Week #2 showdown, before falling 24-7 on the scoreboard and a spot in the rankings. Still, it was a more competitive performance against the Tigers than DAC rival Michigan City, who Chesterton just so happens to be playing this week. With both teams putting losses to Warsaw in the rearview mirror, this week is huge for both teams - not only for early positioning in the DAC standings but for momentum as conference play begins.

That was exactly the kind of performance the Vikings needed with the LaPorte Slicers coming to Vikings Field to open DAC play. Gang Green is the favorite again this week so now’s the time to show that reports of Valpo’s demise may have been premature.
