#10 Lowell Red Devils
Last Season: 7-5
The Devils made me do it – rank them that is. We know that Kirk, make that Keith (Kilmer), takes a lot of heat in Lowell, so we figured it would be in his best interest to include the team he coaches in the opening poll of the season – but favors are only for week one. If they want to stay ranked, the Devils need to win.
#9 LaPorte Slicers
Last Season: 3-8
A young team with a new coach took their fair share of lumps in 2019, but with their top three rushers and top two tacklers back in 2020, those growing pains should pay some dividends as the Slicers try to move their way up the difficult DAC standings.
#8 Hanover Central Wildcats
Last Season: 6-4
With a bevy of starters coming back, including starting QB Blaze Cano and his favorite targets in Adam Graham and Bryan Hoover, the Wildcat offense should be even more dangerous than last year’s squad which averaged over 28 points a game. Could this be the year that HC breaks through in the post-season? They’ll have the weapons to do so.
#7 Andrean 59ers
Last Season: 10-4
After starting the 2019 campaign with a 2-3 record, things started to click at “The Holy Lands” with Andrean riding a strong defense and the legs of Ryan Walsh to a semi-state appearance. With seven starters back on each side of the ball, don’t be surprised if Niner Nation makes another run to semi-state…or beyond.
#6 Crown Point Bulldogs
Last Season: 6-5
With a third year starter at football’s most important position, the Bulldogs look to do some barking in 2020, but the Duneland is always tough, and this year will be no exception. Rumor has it that changes may be coming to Crown Town. Will a winning season make a difference…or will that not matter?
#5 Calumet Warriors
Last Season: 9-2
Talk about unfair. The Warriors are loaded and could arguably have been the best team to call Gary home since the 1989 Lew Wallace Hornets. It’s a shame they won’t get to prove it, at least for the time being, but maybe that’ll change. Cal Township is known as the Land That Time Forgot because not much changes there, but let’s hope some minds are changed and they remember to play football this year!
#4 Chesterton Trojans
Last Season: 6-4
The Trojans want respect. In football, you get respect by winning games. Chesterton has the talent to win their fair share, but we’ve said that before. What will be different in 2020?
#3 Hobart Brickies
Last Season: 11-3
The Brickies motto is “Play 15,” as in games. Last year they only played 14. This season they’re looking to go all the way…with that said, something feels right about Region football.
#2 Merrillville Pirates
Last Season: 11-2
Pirate purple will be a color to keep an eye on in 2020. The Bucs figured to be good, but then Morton had its season canceled and Merrillville became the beneficiary of several transfers – kids that will play in college. A game in late November at Lucas Oil Stadium is not out of the question for these Pirates.
#1 Valparaiso Vikings
Last Season: 13-1
The Vikings were already loaded, then they added an all-state level QB. It’s like the rich are gettin’ richer. Should be fun to wear green this Fall.
